Are You a Good Boss? Some Stats to Consider

Posted by: - September 29, 2015

It's hard to quantify the difference in a "good" boss and a "bad" boss, but you know it when you see it.

Studies show that the best bosses are skilled at interpersonal relationship building, constructively criticizing, and leading buy example. We've all (hopefully) had the pleasure of working under a great boss - someone who effectively manages a team without ever feeling like, well, the boss. But what about the rest? Middling managers are unfortunately more of the norm than we'd all like to admit, but they generally keep everything running smoothly. But the bad bosses? They do more harm than good.

4 Things to Think About During Your Interview

Posted by: - December 3, 2014

Job interviews can be stressful.

Not only are you worried about whether you're qualified you're probably also concerned about the impression you're giving off, whether you're right for the job, or even if the position will pay what you need. We get it! Interviews are a necessary part of finding just the right candidate for each job and we'll let you in on a little industry secret: Almost no one gives a perfect interview.

Like anything else, how well your interview goes greatly depends on your vibe with the interviewer, their understanding of yourresume, and even the weather. You can't impact every part of the exchange! That's why it's so crucial you do make an effort to affect the areas of a job interview you do have control over...and there are more than you think.

Here are four things to think about before, during, and after your interview to ensure you've covered your bases well.

Should Your Business Hire Seasonal Workers?

Posted by: - November 20, 2014

The 2014 holiday season is set to be a big one for business.

Retailers are gearing up for a heavy shopping season and producers, logistics companies, and even tech services are working hard to meet these increased demands. One of the most time-honored solutions to the wave of winter business is the hiring of temporary seasonal workers. Should your business consider hiring seasonal employees this year?

Over a quarter of all companies say they plan to hire at least one temporary worker this season. The upside of this hiring swing for temp workers is that nearly half of all seasonal hiring managers say they hope to bring some or all of the new workers on full time once their contract's over.

Retail is, of course, the most prolific seasonal hiring industry. In 2014, Target hopes to fill nearly 19,000 seasonal roles while Toys R' Us is bringing on over 8,000 temporary employees. Other industries such as IT, marketing, and fulfillment will also be bulking up their rosters by as much as 10% just to meet the needs of increased demand.

A Bad Hire is More Expensive Than You Think

Posted by: - November 12, 2014

Did you know that bad hiring decisions are responsible for as much as 80% of employee turnover?

In a vast majority of poor hiring cases the mistake is realized within about six months…but that doesn’t mean replacing the wrong employee is cheap. In fact, recruiters estimate it can cost anywhere from one-and-a-half to two times the employee’s annual salary to find a replacement. Those are staggering numbers!

So, where do these numbers come from? Why is a bad hire so expensive?

Skills IT Applicants Need for 2015

Posted by: - October 24, 2014

2015 is set to be a banner year for the IT industry.

Tech industry hiring is up and IT salaries are rising to match. Even Forbes says the "information services" sector will have the biggest growth in new-grad hires in 2015, up 51% over last year. So what skills do IT job applicants need to stand out in a field that's become the go-to for smart, driven professionals?

Here are some IT skills to think about, cultivate, and even become certified in if necessary. They're in demand.

Cloud Computing

It wasn't so long ago businesses were nervous to put any sensitive information "in the cloud." Those days are over. Cloud computing skills among IT workers are some of the most in-demand in the industry, especially for those that can be billed as in-house cloud 'experts.' Knowing the ins and outs of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and other IaaS offerings can set you apart in a tight employee search.

6 Things Recruiters Wish You'd Always Do

Posted by: - October 15, 2014

Recruiters are only as good as their talent pool.

The relationship between recruiter and candidate can be a wildly-successful, mutually-beneficial one...that is, if both parties live up to certain expectations. Quality recruiters are always working hard to find you a satisfying, good paying position at a company that will appreciate your talents, but it's important to remember that you've got responsibilities too.

Living up to your end of the bargain when it comes to being a recruitable candidate isn't difficult but it does require consistency. Here are six things every recruiter wishes you as a member of the talent pool would always, always do.

14 Things to Delete from Your Resume

Posted by: - September 11, 2014

Recruiters get inundated with dozens, sometimes hundreds of resumes a day. That means they don’t have hours to pour over every word which makes it all the more important that they don’t come across things and phrases they don’t want to see!

These 14 things don’t deserve precious space on your resume if you want to get noticed by employers, staffing firms, and recruiters alike.

1. "Self-Motivated"
In theory, “self-motivated” is a perfect resume word. It shows initiative, drive, and…actually, it’s little more than a humblebrag and it doesn’t mean much because it’s so overused. Instead, focus on specific instances where you proved you were motivated. Provide numbers, examples, and more descriptive language.

When Should Your Business Use a Recruiter?

When Should Your Business Use a Recruiter?

Thousands of U.S. companies rely on the services of professional recruiting firms to fill employment needs. Some companies choose not to work with recruiters for various reasons – in house HR, specificity, budgeting concerns – but there are plenty more good reasons to bring in a professional recruiting team to help with staffing needs.

Verigent has placed over 12,000 personnel in jobs around the country. We specialize in IT and telecom staffing but recruiters have various niches: some focus on accounting, some on JAVA developers, some on construction, and so on. Here are a few instances your business should consider using a recruiter to help meet its hiring needs…

Things You Should Always Tell Your Recruiter

Posted by: - July 24, 2014

Your recruiter can be your greatest ally in your search for a new job.

Whether you're looking for part time work, a temp gig, or even something more permanent your recruiter wants to help you find the kind of work that compliments your skills and benefits your employer, too. No one has your back like they do but it's crcial that you're honest with them from day one so they're working with all the facts.

Are you planning on talking to a recruiter? For better placement and to find the right job, here are a few things you should always be upfront about whether they ask you or not.

11 Cities You Wouldn't Expect for Tech

Posted by: - July 1, 2014

Everyone knows America's "tech cities."

There's Silicon Valley, of course, and neighboring San Francisco. There's Seattle, there's New York, and even Miami's got a vibrant tech scene. But there are a number of cities flying just below the tech jobs-radar, expanding their industry footprint one startup at a time, many of which might surprise you. Whether you're looking for IT temp work, want to launch a career in programming, or even have the engineering bug, these eleven cities are worth a second look.

1. Milwaukee
Milwaukee, surprisingly, has a third of all Wisconsin's tech business and there are few cities outpacing them in high-tech innovation. When the city's manufacturing sector took a huge hit in the last few decades, industry leaders did a great job marrying technological innovation with old-school manufacturing techniques.
Surprising Statistics About Business Staffing

Posted by: - June 17, 2014

Staffing is no longer a fringe segment of business.

Employers are more and more finding that specialized staffing firms like Verigent can alleviate risk, help the bottom line, and shore up big jobs they may not have the infrastructure for otherwise. Still, staffing, temp workers, and recruiting are concepts too many businesses don't know enough about - and it's easy to understand the skepticism surrounding the industry given such a long loyalty to permanent, tenured employees.

The good news is, "staffing" doesn't have to mean temporary and it's so much more than just a few warm bodies to meet an arbitrary quota. Increasingly, super-specialized industries such as telecom and IT are turning to staffing firms to fullfill short-term and long term need, particularly when the need requires an employee with a highly-specific set of skills.

Here are a few statistics about the staffing industry you probably didn't know. Isn't it time your business looked into working with a recruiter?

Whether you manage employees, own your own business, or even work in a particularly risky occupation, these summer occupational safety tips are good to keep in mind.

What's Your Work Personality?

Posted by: - September 19, 2012

Let’s face it. We’re all different by nature and have our own ways of doing things, sometimes known as our quirks. Each characteristic trait we possess brings something to the table, whether positive or negative. These various personality dynamics can help a company run smoothly if balanced properly. In reality, if we all operated and functioned in the same manner, things would be accomplished at a very one-sided pace. Wouldn’t the workplace be quite boring [or even unsuccessful] if new ideas were never presented, different processes weren’t created, and two sides of a situation were never seen? I think so!

The real question here though is what is your personality type? Below I have listed the common types of personalities seen in professional atmospheres and their stereotypical traits. Where do you fall? Does your company have a good mix? Can people with different viewpoints work together well? Let’s find out!

What's the Better Form of Communication...Phone or Email?

Posted by: - August 6, 2012

In today’s world, there are multiple varieties of communication. There is the old-fashioned, “face to face” communication, talking on the phone, but not typically a phone at home…more like a mobile phone. There is text messaging, video conferencing, instant messaging, all types of social media platforms, and emailing. I’m sure there are others that I’m leaving out, but these seem to be the most popular forms. I would have to argue though that in the workplace, emailing and talking on the phone seem to be the most popular when handling business.

The Importance of Goal Setting

Posted by: - January 16, 2012

Goal setting is a good habit to get in if you are looking to grow individually and professionally. By goal setting, you are preparing yourself for what the bigger picture might bring, while allowing yourself to focus on how to get there. Think of the most successful person you know.

Do you think they had a plan and goals set for themselves, or do you think success just fell in their lap?

Some might be so lucky to have fallen in to it naturally, but most people have some type of plan in mind and have to work hard to get to their place of success.

The Art of Being a Good Listener

Posted by: - December 14, 2011

To maintain healthy relationships and to overall be a likeable person, it is recommended that you become a good listener if you aren’t already. This is vital in personal settings, but even more important in the workforce. Although sometimes it can be exhausting to be the “listener”, it can actually be beneficial overall. Take a minute to reflect on yourself and your social situations. Are you considered “the talker” who dominates most conversations or do you hardly get a word in because you’re too busy listening?

How to Be a Positive Influence In the Workplace

Posted by: - December 5, 2011

Many people strive for excellence in the workplace to not only benefit their company, but to see personal growth for their self. This type of person usually qualifies as a hard worker, has a positive outlook, and is happy to help others if needed. These personal attributes are important because the success of a company relies heavily on team effort.

Take a few minutes to think about yourself and the role that you play at your job. What do you bring to your team? Are you a positive influence or are you known for griping and complaining? Are you helpful to others when they have questions or do you ignore them? Are you pleasant to be around or do co-workers avoid you? Take a few minutes to examine how you perceive yourself at work and how others might.

IBM vs. Microsoft

Posted by: David Goldman - November 14, 2011

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — From 2001 through the beginning of 2009, Microsoft and IBM shared the same story: Once great technology growth stocks, their shares had flat-lined since the dot-com bust.

Microsoft has remained in a funk. Yet IBM has been able to shake it off — it is now one of the hottest stocks on the market, up 28% this year.

IBM is so attractive that Warren Buffett surprised the investment world when he announced Monday morning that Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA, Fortune 500) had bought $10.7 billion in IBM (IBM, Fortune 500) shares over the past eight months. Berkshire now owns 5% of IBM’s shares.

But Microsoft, like IBM, is performing well right now. Both have achieved record sales and profits in recent quarters. So why are investors not as excited about Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) — and is there something Microsoft can learn from IBM?
Analysts said it’s all about what lies ahead. A bet on Microsoft is a bet on the viability of the personal computer: More than 60% of the company’s revenue comes from PC software like Windows and Office.

But PC sales are slowing. Cloud-based services like Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) Apps and tablet computers like Apple’s (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPad are coming on strong.

9 Things Successful People Do

Posted by: Heidi Grant Halvorson - October 28, 2011

An interesting read by Heidi Grant Halvorson from The Harvard Business Review

Why have you been so successful in reaching some of your goals, but not others? If you aren’t sure, you are far from alone in your confusion. It turns out that even brilliant, highly accomplished people are pretty lousy when it comes to understanding why they succeed or fail. The intuitive answer — that you are born predisposed to certain talents and lacking in others — is really just one small piece of the puzzle. In fact, decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do.

What Are Hiring Managers Really Looking For?

Posted by: Steve Tobak - September 13, 2011

Great tips on What Hiring managers really look for in a candidate. [article posted by Steve Tobak]

“Interviewing for a job is a lot like giving a presentation. It’s hard to imagine your career going anywhere unless you learn how to do it effectively. Unfortunately, you probably weren’t born with the interview gene. For most people, interviewing is a real struggle.

So what do you do? Get online and search for tips. Unfortunately, the vast majority of that stuff is written by self-proclaimed experts who’ve never been hiring managers and didn’t learn how to do it right from a Fortune 500 company that depends on hiring young up-and-comers and promoting from within.

In other words, they really have no idea what they’re talking about.

8 Ways to Communicate Your Strategy More Effectively

Posted by: Georgie Everse - August 23, 2011

[Georgia Everse | Harvard Business Review]

A frustrated CEO recently shared with me that her employees had lost their edge. They were internally focused, their speed-to-market was down, and they couldn’t find a good balance between serving customers well while making healthy margins. The result was slow progress against the company strategy and an inability to profitably deliver on the value proposition. She had attempted to motivate employees and be clear about the strategy, but she was falling short and was looking for answers on what to do next. The solution in many cases is to overhaul internal communications strategies in order to convince employees of the authenticity, importance, and relevance of their company’s purpose and strategic goals. Here are just a few communications approaches that will help you effectively reach your employees and encourage behaviors that advance your strategy and improve your results.

Tips for Negotiating Salary

Posted by: Jim Hopkinson - August 17, 2011

During a job search, candidates must adopt the skills of many professions. You analyze the job market like a research scientist, craft a resume like a best-selling author and network like a seasoned politician.

There’s also an occupation to emulate at the crucial moment when salary is discussed: FBI Hostage Negotiator.

Imagine the HR director sitting across from you is a lunatic in a bank vault with 10 hostages. Instead of demanding millions and a private jet, he’s guarding the spreadsheet containing the payroll budget.

4 Steps to Understanding Your Exit Strategy

Posted by: Chris Jackson/Jamie Waldren - August 11, 2011

The world of government contracting can be capricious and unforgiving. One year, you are servicing a $20 million dollar contract and managing dozens of employees; the next year it’s over, and you are scrambling to find a comparable engagement or face layoffs and reduced revenues.

In fact, when it comes to exit planning, timing is crucial. Windows of opportunity can be dismayingly small and infrequent. If you aren’t watching for them and aren’t prepared when they appear — if you blink — you’ll miss your best, and perhaps only, chance to secure an optimal sales price.

Most everyone has a mobile phone these days and now it is even more common that the majority of mobile device users own smart phones.
